Students using lab equipment

Do you like studying living things? Would you like to help treat or cure illnesses and diseases? Or maybe you have plans to go on to graduate school to be a Physician Assistant or dentist? Then consider a Bachelor of Science in Biology at University of Detroit Mercy. The Biology Department offers degree programs that prepare graduates to become physicians, dentists, physician assistants, research scientists or educators.

Great Things At Detroit Mercy

  • All of the biology classes, including laboratories, are taught by faculty members, not teaching assistants.
  • Strong laboratory resources and experiences, including personal instruction by scholars in their field.
  • The five-year Bachelor/Physician Assistant (PA) Program and the seven-year Bachelor/Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) Program let qualified students save time (and tuition!) in getting a highly sought after degree.
  •  Small class sizes — our average student-to-teacher ratio is 11:1; that means plenty of individualized attention and plenty of opportunity to get help with your experiments.
  • In the tradition of our Jesuit and Mercy sponsors, Detroit Mercy offers a great, well-rounded education. We don’t just teach biology; we create community leaders.

Your Boundless Future

Biology graduates go on to enjoy a wide variety of careers. Some do research within the medical and life sciences, covering areas such as health and disease, neurology, genomics, microbiology and pharmacology. Others go on to become physicians, physician assistants, dentists, research scientists, educators, forensic investigators, environmental technicians or pharmaceutical sales representatives.

“Doing research is a whole different kind of class. In the research lab, you’re actually doing things the way you think they should be done and that is the biggest learning experience I’ll ever have at Detroit Mercy.”
